Course Goals

        The general objective of this course is to make students learn to examine argumentation as a tool for both inquiry and advocacy. Students will develop an experiential focus upon critical examination of issues and ideas (inquiry) and the use of argumentation to support and defend a position (advocacy). This course is designed to expose students to the fundamentals of academic and professional communication in order to develop professionals who can effectively apply communication theories and best practices to meet their academic and professional communication needs.

        The course aims to;

        To strengthen students’ reading skills

        To encourage students to respond critically to ideas

        To prepare students for writing in courses across the curriculum

        To help students develop basic information literacy skills

        To help students develop awareness of their progress as readers and writers

        guide students in an intensive exploration of the structure and function of human communication and in the process develop into effective communicators.

        provide students with the opportunity to develop and explore their own styles of communication. At end of the course, students will be able to;

        deal with unknown words by guessing their meaning.

        analyse academic materials about their subject matter and work on academic vocabulary.

1. Week Explaining course objectives and contents and expectations from students; giving information about how students will be evaluated, lessons will be taught, what material will be used; how students will study and get prepared for lessons
2. Week To make students aware of different types of texts, examining different paragraph types included in the texts such as illustration, description, definition and narration; moreover, to have students acquire the habit of extensive reading, explaining them how they will study extra reading texts and including some of them in lessons every week; examining different types of sentences and working out punctuation marks; studying such reading skills as previewing, predicting and scanning, Introduction to critical thinking skills, critical reading & critical writing
3. Week Identifying main ideas and supporting ideas in the given texts and paraphrasing them; predicting the meaning of words from the context. Selected reading
4. Week Examining expository paragraphs and writing a sample expository paragraph together with the class
